Jesse Rosten and Death in the Civil War

Greetings Cosmic Americans!

This is Building Houses, by Wesley Jensen. Director and Editor Jesse Rosten said of his video, "The thought of dying scares me to death. So I made this video hoping to convince myself it won’t be that bad. Turn it up, watch it full screen."

I wonder how that worked out for him. Comments welcome.

Peace,
Keith

  1. Good stuff! Nice song, nice concept. From my point of view, this conveys a better feel for the time and circumstances than pretty much anything I've seen on film (or tape). Conceptually it borrows a bit, not too much, from Red Badge of Courage, but really good and gets better each time you watch it. Thanks for posting this!

  2. I'll have to think some more on this, but one immediate reaction is that the shot at about 2:56 is inspired by this famous image.

  4. The skirmish action in this video (especially the big tree the "hero" hides behind) instantly reminded of the painting Picket Duty in Virgina by Albert Bierstadt. I'm not a big art historian, but I recognized it because it was one of the paintings used by American Heritage in their Civil War Series of puzzles released back during the Centennial. (Until I googled it today I thought this was a Winslow Homer painting.)

Funny how two different trees reminded Andy and me of two different famous* images.

    * famous only to Civil War geeks
